Federer was born on August 8th, 1981 in Basel, Switzerland. His mother, Mrs. Lynette Federer belong to Gauteng, South Africa, and his father Mr. Robert Federer is from Canton of St. Gallen.

He only has one sibling, Diana, his older sister, who is also the mother of twins. Therefore Federer holds dual nationality of that of Switzerland as well as South Africa.

He could speak different languages as well and is well efficient in speaking Swiss German, Standard German, English, and French. He could also speak Italian and Swedish language.

He grew up in the nearby towns of Birsfelden, Riehen, and later Münchenstein, not far from the French and German borders.

In the year 2003, as a Swiss citizen, he was asked to join the military forces but later was declared not fit which was a blessing in disguise for him as well as for the tennis world and his military career was over.
